How To Reduce Anxiety & Build Confidence - Lyn Smith & Bret Davis

BEST MOMENTS

“The purpose of the book was not to become a bestseller… if just a handful of other folks out in the world can live a happier existence, then I feel we all owe it to each other to kind of make that a goal.”

“The eagle that chases two rabbits catches none. So I often remind myself, just catch your first rabbit… Once you start seeing that and you see your to-do list shrinking, your anxiety level goes down.”

“You can’t trip over what’s behind you. We get so caught up in not only beating ourselves up over mistakes we’ve made in the past… the power lies within myself and my inner voice to create a better, positive existence.”

“I think we can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking we’re being the bigger person by being more forgiving. But actually, what we’re doing is tolerating behaviour we shouldn’t be tolerating.”

Lyn welcomes author Bret Davis to discuss reducing anxiety and building confidence, he shares some of the philosophies in his book, “Bret Isms”. Bret also talks about his personal journey, including the influence of being brought up as the son of a professional football coach, and how his observations of super-confident people shaped his insights.

The conversation delves into practical tips for managing anxiety, such as recognising anxious moments, focusing on positive self-talk, and setting healthy boundaries.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Everyone experiences anxiety at some level, and it’s important to acknowledge that feeling anxious is a shared human experience. Understanding the root cause of anxiety can help individuals manage it better.
  • Techniques such as breaking tasks into smaller, manageable parts and reparing for worst-case scenarios can help alleviate feelings of overwhelm and anxiety.
  • Taking time for quiet reflection or “listening” to one’s inner voice can foster more self-awareness and lead to personal growth. This practice can help individuals identify areas for improvement and appreciate the value of self-love.
  • Training the mind to focus on positive aspects of situations, rather than negative ones, can enhance self-esteem and overall happiness. This shift in perspective can make it easier to love oneself and be more confident.

Leadership Lessons from the NFL How Bret Davis Turns Failure into Confidence - Warriors Unmasked Podcast

Throughout the episode, Bret and Chuck explore how leadership is not just about victories, but about dealing with adversity and how vulnerability can actually be a sign of strength. Bret shares his “Bretisms”—insights drawn from a lifetime of experience in high-stress environments, designed to help people reduce anxiety and build confidence in everyday life.

Key Takeaways from Bret’s Journey:

  • Growing up in an NFL family taught Bret invaluable lessons about leadership, adaptability, and handling pressure. Moving every couple of years for his dad’s career exposed him to different cultures, teaching him how to fit in and stand out as a leader.
  • One of Bret’s key leadership principles is “Take the blame, shed the credit”. Great leaders, he notes, are quick to give credit to others while taking responsibility for failures.
  • Bret also emphasizes the importance of vulnerability in leadership. In high-pressure environments, it’s crucial to open up and lean on your support system rather than trying to be “bulletproof.”

Thoroughly researched with many musings from history, this is not the ususal "you should be doing this" book. Rather, it is a mature look at what really matters in life - beyond the superficial. I was impressed by the depth of thought and wide range of references that went into each chapter. To be truly happy, fulfilled, successful, what should we be focused on and what can we safely ignore? I am reminded of the great Indian philosopher, Shankara, whose "Crest Jewel of Discrimination" challenged us to separate the "real from the unreal.". In a modern vernacular, I feel Bret Davis is urging the same. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it to the contemplative reader.
